Researchers from university of twente in Netherlands found the world’s smallest and most accurate 3D-printed biopsy robot. This device is made from 3D-printed plastic and is driven by air pressure.
According to study the advantage of plastic is that robots can be used in an MRI scanner. Mechanical biopsy devices consist of contained metal so because of the strong magnetic field used in their procedure they can’t be placed in MRIs and it would affect their accuracy.
Usually MRI scanners are more accurate and give good visualization of abnormal tissues but we cant say full accuracy because needles are being controlled by hand. Cells can be lost during the procedure but in the case of Stormram 4 it collects the cells which are needed for biopsy. It supports the whole diagnostic procedure.Â
The advantages of Stormram 4 are
- A single thin needle biopsy enable quicker and more accurate diagnosis
- Effectively real time MRI scanning
- Accurate needle control
Robots can be used in an MRI scanner. Robot is controlled from outside the MRI scanner by means of 5 meter long air pipes.
