Wipro GE Healthcare has unveiled the first prototype of the locally made Computed Tomography (CT) system. 500 healthcare providers and 75 engineers were a part of this project. The machine has been shipped to a hospital in Pune and the company has received orders for more CT machines.
GE Healthcare is a local manufacturing company that is dedicated to introducing latest medical innovations in India, especially in remote and underdeveloped districts where the healthcare infrastructure is less developed. The entire machine, including all its parts have been made in India, making it the first Ct machine to be made locally. The machine has a cost of less than 1 crore.
The noteworthy features of the CT machine include 36 percent lesser emission of radiation, 28 percent less life cycle cost and weighs half as much as the conventional CT machines. Along with the development of these machines, the company is also investing in the training of technicians to operate this sophisticated equipment owing to a dearth of skilled technicians in the country. 30 training centers have been established around the country with the singular aim of training more than 100,000 people during the next 5 years.
The CT machine is said to be 40% cheaper than comparable GE health products. It will pave way for more healthcare products to be made in the country rather than relying on their import as Milan Rao, President and CEO, GE Healthcare puts it, “This is the first CT system to be entirely designed, developed and manufactured in India.”
